The Black LA Relief & Recovery Fund supports community organizations working on the ground to meet the immediate and long-term needs of Black communities impacted by the wildfires in Los Angeles County. Launched by the California Black Freedom Fund in partnership with the California Community Foundation, this fund is dedicated to a community-led and centered approach to equitable recovery.

Historically Black communities, especially in Altadena and Pasadena, have been hit particularly hard by the Eaton Fire. These neighborhoods, once places of promise and opportunity for middle-class Black families unable to purchase homes in other parts of Los Angeles because of racist covenants and redlining, are now sites of immense loss. Homes passed down from generation to generation – part of family legacies – have been destroyed and places of gathering, such as schools, churches and parks have been hard hit. While the structures are gone, the power of community remains.

For thousands of displaced Black residents, the road to rebuild is just beginning and full of challenges exacerbated by historic and ongoing inequities. From providing resources to meet the most basic of needs to advancing policies that protect Black wealth and treasured communities from speculators — philanthropy can play a key role in supporting the journey ahead to restore, recover, and rebuild alongside our communities.

Join us in standing with directly impacted Black communities across Los Angeles County by donating today.

The Fund provides grants and technical assistance to non-profit organizations that are:

  • Rooted in the Black community
  • Providing immediate relief to impacted families and residents
  • Organizing for an equitable, community-led recovery

Areas of funding include: direct financial aid, housing, youth services, senior services, counseling and healing, support for small businesses, and building community power for a community-led recovery.

The Black LA Relief & Recovery Fund is unique in that it will be guided by a Community Advisory Committee of impacted community members to ensure grantmaking and technical assistance offerings are informed by local leaders who are trusted and connected to the community.

The Community Advisory Committee will advise the Fund’s grant making and provision of technical assistance. By engaging a diverse set of locally rooted Black-serving organizations and leaders, we are ensuring recovery efforts are community-led and designed to meet the many needs of the Black community.

While the California Black Freedom Fund is a project of the Silicon Valley Community Foundation, we support Black communities statewide. The California Community Foundation (CCF) is the California Black Freedom Fund’s Southern California home and anchor. The Black LA Relief & Recovery Fund is housed at CCF.

In just four years, The California Black Freedom Fund (CBFF) has granted over $41 million to Black-serving organizations in the state resulting in the largest pooled transfer of wealth to Black organizing in the history of California. Because of CBFF, more than 140 Black power-building organizations are growing the capacity of Black communities to move a community-led agenda and shape the issues that impact their lives.

The California Black Freedom Fund maintains a breadth and depth of relationships with the Black community that is unparalleled:

  • CBFF has grantees in every region of the state;
  • 68% of our partners have budgets under $1 million.

With funding from CBFF, organizations have been able to hire more staff and plan for the long term. Partners have won landmark policies and are advocating for Black communities at every level, from school board to county to statewide. And critically, movement infrastructure has been bolstered with funding to anchor networks that work directly with grassroots organizations and innovative initiatives.

To date, the Fund has distributed $2.2 million in grants to 28 community organizations.
